Heartburn Treatment and Prevention

Heartburn, also referred to as pyrosis or acid indigestion, is a condition that can lead to a burning sensation within the throat and chest and is usually accompanied with a bitter or sour taste in the mouth. This condition can be experienced when the digestive acids from the stomach flows back up to the esophagus. Some of the most common causes of heartburn include hiatal hernia, GERD or gastroesophageal reflux, pregnancy, trigger foods and alcohol consumption. However, heartburn sufferers should know that there are lots of remedies available for the condition, such as prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines.

Heartburn Prevention

If you do not want to experience the condition or go through the consumption of medications or natural remedies for heartburn, it would be best to learn how you can prevent the condition. As much as possible, you have to make sure that you avoid consuming foods that can trigger a heartburn attack. Avoid the consumption of foods that are acidic, spicy and salty. Foods with nitrites should be excluded from meals as well, such as summer sausage, hotdogs and other types of preserved meats. Another way to prevent heartburn is to avoid lying down after having a meal. You have to make sure that you give yourself at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down or going to bed. Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking should also be avoided, as these can trigger a heartburn attack as well.

Heartburn Remedies

If you are already afflicted with the condition, various heartburn remedies are available to help you manage the symptoms of the condition. According to experts, a formula that contains melatonin and other supplements can greatly reduce the symptoms of GERD for as long as 10 months. These formulas contain 6 mg. of melatonin, 500 mg. of vitamin D, 0.8 mg. of vitamin B6, 100 mg. of 5-hydroxytrytophan, L-methionine, 50 mg. calcium, 100 mg. betaine, 50 mg. L-taurine, 400 ug of folic acid and 1.7 mg. of riboflavin.

Another effective remedy for heartburn is banana. This can provide soothing effects against the symptoms of the condition since it has natural antacid properties. Chamomile is also effective against heartburn symptoms, as it is helpful in easing digestion and contains natural anti-inflammatory properties. You can consume chamomile tea at least 3 to 4 times per day to prevent heartburn flare-ups. Licorice is also effective against the condition, as it can help protect the stomach lining.

Chronic Heartburn

The treatment for heartburn is not exclusive for palliative care. Take note that if you are experiencing chronic heartburn then you might be going through a serious health condition and heartburn manifests as a symptoms of that condition. In this case, a thorough diagnosis is necessary in order to determine the severity of the condition and to identify its root cause. If chronic heartburn is left untreated, this can cause severe damages to the esophageal lining and this can put you at risk of developing esophageal cancer.

    Now, the last sentence made me nervous. I often experience heartburn but I just let it pass, since I thought that it’s nothing serious. I guess now, I would need to try the remedies mentioned here and see if it will work. If not, I’ll consult the doctor and hope that it’s not esophageal cancer. Thanks for this article.

    Well, basically, living a clean and healthy life is the key to prevent heartburn. Changing the diet a bit too, avoiding spicy and fatty foods. Banana is one of my favorite fruits. It’s an amazing one that works best against a lot of conditions. Thanks for the information.

    If you experience it all the time, and it’s already bothering you and the pain is already severe, consult your doctor right away. If you’re not experiencing it yet, remember that prevention is the best thing to do.

      Sorry to say but yes. This is not only for heartburn but for other conditions too. It’s recommended to stay away from them.
