Acid Reflux Recipes for your Daily Menu

The burning sensation in the throat and chest is usually due to a condition known as heartburn, which is a symptom of acid reflux disease. Right at the bottom of the esophagus is a sphincter that opens to let food go through and closes to keep the food inside the stomach. However, due to some reasons, this sphincter fails to close in time or tightly, thus allowing stomach contents and gastric juices to go back from the stomach and into the esophagus. There are foods that can actually cause the sphincter to malfunction while there are some that can enhance its performance. In order to prevent the condition from occurring, it is necessary to know what foods to eat in order to relieve the condition.


Fiber is helpful in enhancing digestion and in order to prevent heartburn or acid reflux, you have to make sure that your diet is loaded with lots of fiber. When there is enough fiber, the stomach secretes lesser amount of acid than when there is excessive amount of fats. Foods that are high in fiber can also help reduce the risk of bloating, gas and indigestion, which are all associated with acid reflux. As much as possible, you should avoid the consumption of citrus fruits, as these can trigger heartburn attacks.

Your diet should be focused on fresh or frozen vegetables and avoid the consumption of fried veggies, as these too can worsen the condition. Whole grains should be a part of your acid reflux diet as well. This includes pasta and cereal, whole wheat bread, barley, oatmeal, popcorn minus the butter and brown rice. Chronic conditions of acid reflux can cause serious damages to the esophageal lining. However, whole grains have minerals that can protect the esophageal lining from these damages.

Protein Strength

Protein is helpful in building and repairing muscles in the body and is considered as a great acid reflux treatment. Foods that contain high amount of lean protein can help strengthen the esophageal muscle. Meats are good sources of protein but make sure that you avoid the ones that contain high amounts of fat. When cooking, opt for lean meats and eliminate the fats. You should also avoid frying it and have it broiled or grilled instead. When eating poultry, remove the skin from it and fishes are best when broiled or baked. For dairy products that are high in protein, opt for the ones with low or no fats at all and avoid whole-milk products.

Smaller Meals

When eating, you should avoid consuming large meals and opt for small proportions so that your stomach can easily digest the food. Take note that huge or heavy meals tend to stay inside the stomach for a longer period and this can encourage acid secretion during the process of digestion, which is subsequent to acid reflux. It is also necessary to consume water while eating but avoid drinking too much water as it can also slow down digestion.

An example of a great acid reflux recipe is broccoli and egg masala. If you want to try this, you can do so by following the instructions below:

Broccoli and Egg Masala


  • 2 cups of raw broccoli
  • 4 large eggs, hard-boiled
  • ½ tsp. of cardamom
  • ½ tsp of ground cloves
  • 1 medium onion, white
  • ½ tsp of coriander seed, ground

  • ½ tsp of cinnamon, ground
  • 3 tbsp of flake coconut
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • ½ tsp of cumin seed

Preparation of Masala: Fry cardamom, cinnamon, clove and coriander seed and let it cool. Grind all these using a blender and then add coconut flakes.


Heat the oil using a non-stick pan for at least 1 minute and then add the cumin seeds. Once the seeds began spluttering, add the onions and salt and stir-fry it for at least 1 minute. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry it again for 2 minutes before putting the lid. Let it stand for at least 2 minutes. While waiting, cut the eggs into half and put them in the pan, make sure that the yellow part touches the pan. Turn the eggs after 2 minutes, add the garam masala then turn the flame to low or medium heat. Leave it for 2 minutes. Gently mix until the broccoli and eggs are coated and then top it with cilantro.
